2022 Q1 report on charity quilting

In the first three months of 2022, on average, Judi and I completed two charity quilts every three days — 61 total. That included a dozen twin-size quilts for Catholic Charities (CC). About 800 Afghan refugees have been settled in the KC area and CC is one of three agencies assisting our new neighbors. After the initial delivery, Judi has volunteered with processing the donations for refugees. CC anticipates assisting with Ukrainian refugees in the months ahead.

This quarter we also organized the first sewing pop-up since January 2020 where we hosted eight fifth-graders from the service club at a local elementary school. We previously reported 13 quilt tops completed that morning, but I had forgotten that two students took kits home with them. They returned from spring break with five more completed quilt tops. The total for this initiative, then, is 18 quilts for Project Linus.

One of our quilts sold for $100 at the Olathe Schools Foundation auction that raised $255,000 for mental health services. Earlier this week we completed a Minecraft quilt that will be part of the annual fundraiser for the school where Karla teaches.

2022 has been mostly scrappy so far. Judi expects to continue working through the bits and pieces she has in her highly organized system. In June, I will once again be receiving fabric, yarn, and notions at the Recycling Extravaganza hosted by the city of Overland Park. Last time we reclaimed over 900 pounds of sewing supplies.

Spring has come and I am delighted with warmer days. But you’ll still regularly find us in the basement quilting studio creating comfort for challenged kids.
